Truckers go green
Monday 03 October 2005
Truck
drivers in Scotland are being urged to be more environmentally-conscious
with the help of two hi-tech driving simulators, in a new £3m scheme. The
simulators, one of which is a mobile touring unit that will travel around
the country, show truckers how to become more fuel efficient with their
driving methods.
By March 2006 it is estimated that around 700 road haulage drivers will have
been trained on the simulators.
"This devolved government is committed, in partnership with the Road Haulage
Association and the Freight Transport Association, to helping modernise
Scotland's haulage industry. Part of that commitment is to increase our pool
of skilled, highly trained drivers,” commented Transport Minister Tavish
Scott.
"Through these simulators we will be able to train truck drivers throughout
Scotland which will help reduce fuel consumption and promote safer driving.
This technology is leading the way in truck simulation training in the UK."
