WWF calls for renewable push
Friday 21 October 2005
Conservation group WWF has given evidence to an
Environmental Audit Committee inquiry on the potential of renewable energy.
The group argued that further investment into renewables and ‘more careful’
energy policy could negate the need for the use of nuclear in meeting the
nation’s power requirements.
"The costs of new nuclear power would run into billions of pounds and this
would ultimately be funded by the tax payer,” said David Norman, Head of
Public Affairs at WWF-UK, who attended the inquiry with Dr. Richard Dixon,
Director of Climate Change at WWF-Scotland.
“In contrast renewable energy is reliable, proven and available for use now.
This, combined with realistic measures to reduce our energy use year on
year, could meet all our future energy needs," added Mr. Norman.
The committee’s report will be published in 2006.
