underestimate e-waste disposal options, HP study finds
Sept. 22 -- The majority of corporate America significantly
underestimates the security, financial and environmental impact of
disposing of electronic waste, according to a Hewlett-Packard Co.
survey.
Hewlett-Packardīs leasing and financial services subsidiary, HP
Financial Services, commissioned the survey. Some 70 percent of the
respondents underestimated the cost of disposing of electronics, while
66 percent of the executives with purchasing authority were unaware of
the financial penalties involved in improperly disposing of electronics.
"Throwing old computers and servers out in the trash is dangerous to
the environment, and even if you go as far as hammering nails into a
hard drive, personal information can still be stolen," said Irv Rothman,
president and CEO of HP Financial Services.
London-based TNS, an international market research company, conducted
the survey with 300 corporate management and IT executives at companies
with 500 and more employees
