DOE Funds Renewable Energy Efforts Nationwide

These competitive DOE awards will provide specialized funding in addition to annual formula grants given to each state energy office.

Washington, DC [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman announced that the Department of Energy will provide more than $16,000,000 for 178 energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in 42 states.

The funding for these energy-saving projects is being provided through DOE State Energy Program Special Projects competitive grants, and will be awarded in September.

State energy offices will use these funds to support renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and biomass, promote energy-efficient industrial technologies and improve the energy efficiency of schools, homes and other buildings. Some projects will create opportunities for distributed energy resources. These competitive DOE awards will provide specialized funding in addition to annual formula grants given to each state energy office.

Five of the 11 categories summarized for FY 2005 Awards relate to renewable energy. Greatly abbreviated these five involve:
--The Solar Technology Program ($250,000) for micro inverters as a first step toward commercialization of AC current photovoltaic (PV) products where the fully integrated PV modules/inverters provide AC power to utility-connected or mini-utility loads.
--The State Wind Energy Support ($278,340) is for states to propose instrumentation of existing coastal and barrier island tall towers and to identify projects for wind applications in the treatment, movement and use of water resources.
--The Distributed Energy - Regional ($1,442,000) funds will allow the Regional Application Center to provide support focused on technology transfer and installation of advanced CHP technologies.
--The Biomass ($512,501) funds will support the development of state or local incentives and projects that will facilitate increased market development for bio-based power, fuels and products.
--The Air Quality Integration ($140,000) funds will support states efforts to quantify, verify or validate emission reductions achieved from active projects in an attempt to incorporate the emission reductions into a State Implementation Plan (SIP).
