SWANA to recommend
handling of waste in hurricane-affected parts of La.
Sept. 15 -- The Solid Waste Association of North America is preparing a
report for the state of Louisiana offering recommendations for handling
various solid waste streams in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
SWANA officials said they were preparing the report in response to a
request from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
"Many SWANA members have dealt with the solid waste generated in
natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes," said
John Skinner, SWANA executive director and CEO. "I think we can pull
together a compendium of the most effective techniques that can be used
in the areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina."
SWANA´s recommendations will include recycling materials whenever
possible, Skinner said.
The Louisiana DEQ specifically requested information about managing
construction and demolition debris; disaster-related municipal solid
waste, including spoiled food; household hazardous waste; school
laboratory material; automobile-related waste; propane tanks; white
goods; electronic waste; freon recovery; and mercury thermostats.
SWANA´s membership includes more than 7,500 people employed in the
solid waste industry.
