Iraq, Kuwait form joint committee to develop
oil, gas cooperation
Dubai (Platts)--2Aug2004

Iraq and Kuwait have formed a joint committee to develop bilateral energy
cooperations, Iraq's oil minister Thamer Ghadban said as reported by the
Kuwait News Agency late Sunday. During Ghadban's visit to Kuwait, he met with
his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Ahmed Fahed al-Sabah. Under the joint
committee, Iraq would aim to supply Kuwait with natural gas and would try to
attract Kuwaiti private-sector companies to develop Iraqi oilfields, such as
the Seibah oilfield near the southern city of Basra, Ghadban said as reported
by KUNA. Iraqi oil workers could also be trained by Kuwaiti oil well
fire-fighters, Ghadban said, adding a meeting is expected within the next few
weeks to discuss further cooperation under the joint committee. Iraqi Prime
Minister Iyad Allawi and an accompanying delegation recently visited Kuwait.
The visit marks an improvement in relations after the US-led invasion of Iraq
in March 2003. Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August
1990 over alleged crude production disagreements.
