UK Government launches $92-mil wave, tidal power fund

London (Platts)--2Aug2004

The UK Government launched a GBP50-mil ($92-mil) fund for wave and tidal power
research Monday--a week after the opposition Conservatives criticized the
government for not supporting the nascent technology. Patricia Hewitt, trade
and industry minister, said: "The UK's wave and tidal flows are the greatest
in Europe and I want to ensure we harness these immense natural resources to
generate power for the UK." The Conservatives criticized the government last
week for pushing wind power to the exclusion of other renewable technologies.
But Hewitt said all renewables had to be supported: "Renewable energy--through
wind, wave and other sources--plays a vital part in our fight against climate
change, and we are committed to further developing renewable energy to play an
increasing role in the UK's energy mix." The Marine Research Development Fund
is designed to support British businesses in researching, developing and
bringing to market wave and tide technologies.
