Maine tribe votes to continue discussions on LNG import project

Washington (Platts)--18Aug2004

The Passamaquoddy tribe in Pleasant Point, Maine, late Tuesday voted to
continue talks about siting a liquefied natural gas import terminal on tribal
land. A tribe spokeswoman told Platts that 193 members voted to continue
discussions with Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Quoddy Bay LLC, while 132 members voted
against.

Quoddy Bay has proposed building a $300-mil LNG terminal with initial send-out
capacity of 500,000 Mcf/d. Quoddy Bay has said that it will train some
Passamaquoddy members for some of the jobs at the proposed terminal, but
opponents of the project fear that the terminal would irreparably harm the
tribe's fishing industry, which is the primary source of revenue for many in
the tribe.
