US carbon dioxide emissions increase

11-07-04

US carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels increased by 0.9 % in 2003, from 5,736 mm tons of carbon dioxide in 2002 to 5,788 in 2003, according to preliminary estimates released on June 30 by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The increase is below the average annual growth rate of 1.1 % in emissions from 1990 to 2003.
After a 3 % increase in 2000, primarily because of weather-related factors and growth in the economy, emissions declined in 2001 by 1.8 %.
