A
new report by conservation group WWF claims that power companies around the
world are not putting enough investment into renewable and clean energy sources
in order to reduce their environmental impact. The ‘Ranking Power’ study
gives two-thirds of the world’s leading energy companies a ‘score’ of less
than 1 out of 10, and a massive 90% less than 3 out of 10.
Of the 72 companies surveyed on issues such as sale and investment into clean
energy, US-based firms came out worst, with European companies close behind.
"The power sector is the biggest single polluter of greenhouse gases,
responsible for 37 percent of CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil
fuels," said Nicola Saltman, Climate Change Programme Leader for WWF-UK,
speaking to WWF.org. "However, the companies we analysed are completely
unprepared for fundamental change in the way they invest in clean and efficient
energy. And three-quarters of the companies surveyed were not prepared to
disclose their strategy on global warming."
