Kansas Holds Off Wind Power Development
in Prairie Area
Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius asked last week for wind developers to hold
off on development of wind energy in the Flint Hills area to preserve tallgrass
prairie. This temporary moratorium is meant to give counties in the area time to
develop local guidelines to govern the development of wind energy and to
identify alternative economic development strategies in the Flint Hills area.
The designated area called "Heart of the Flint Hills Area" is a
60-mile-wide section that extends from Kansas' southern border to approximately
25 miles south of the Nebraska border.
The governor urged wind developers to move ahead on projects outside the Flint
Hills area.
The governor plans to use recommendations from the Kansas Energy Council to
design an overall strategy for developing Kansas' wind energy potential while
preserving the agricultural heritage and conserving critical ecosystems in the
Heart of the Flint Hills.
