UK government publishes new planning guidance for renewables

London (Platts)--16Dec2004

The UK government Thursday published new planning guidance to boost
development of renewable energy sources. The guidance, issued by the Office of
the Deputy Prime Minister, is aimed at helping the UK reach government targets
of producing 10% of electricity from green energy by 2010 and 15% by 2015. The
government said that "positive planning policies are needed to expand the
number of renewable schemes and ensure they are sited in appropriate
locations." The new guidance explains what makes a "good" renewable energy
application, how to assess the impact of plans on the landscape and how to
give the community greater involvement. The guide provides advice on the broad
range of renewable energy technologies, including biomass, hydro, solar and
wind.
