Edwards opposes waste repository, Reid says

Washington (Platts)--7Jul2004

Vice presidential candidate John Edwards is committed to stopping the Yucca
Mountain repository project in Nevada, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said
yesterday. Reid, the assistant Democratic leader in the Senate, said he called
Edwards after presidential hopeful John Kerry of Massachusetts announced that
he had picked the North Carolina senator to be his running mate. "John Edwards
supports John Kerry on all issues important to the people of Nevada, including
Sen. John Kerry's pledge to stop nuclear waste coming to Nevada," Reid said in
a statement released by his office. Opposition to the Yucca Mountain project
would be a turnaround for Edwards, who in 2002 supported the Bush
administration's recommendation that the site be used for a nuclear waste
repository. Nevada, where the repository will be a key issue, according to
local media reports, is one of several battleground states in the November
presidential election.
