Jamaica completes its largest windfarm
KINGSTON, Jamaica, 2004-07-14 Refocus Weekly
The largest windfarm in Jamaica has been completed by Renewable Energy Systems of Britain.
The 23 turbines at the Wigton facility have total installed capacity of 20.7
MW. The windfarm was built for Wigton Wind Farm Ltd, a subsidiary of the
Petroleum Corp of Jamaica, which will own and operate the facility in Manchester
province.
Construction started in October 2003, with the first of the 900 kW NEG Micon
turbines being installed in February. The project was supported by the
governments of Jamaica and the Netherlands, and is part of the Jamaican
government’s program to identify green power sources and diversify the
country’s energy mix.
“With the Wigton windfarm, we have broken new ground ... bringing wind power
to Jamaica and completing the RES Group’s first project in the developing
world,” says managing director Ian Mays. “RES initiated the scheme several
years ago and now, having successfully completed installation of the 23
turbines, we are delighted to see the project generating renewable electricity
for Jamaica’s homes and businesses.”
RES had been developing the project with PCJ since 1996. Wigton Wind Farm
Limited purchased the turbines directly from NEG Micon with a grant from the
Netherlands government. Output from the facility will be sold to the Jamaica
Public Service.
The Renewable Energy Systems Group has 6,000 MW of wind capacity at various
stages of development. It is part of the Sir Robert McAlpine group of
construction and engineering companies.
The company recently started construction of a 20-turbine windfarm at Glens of
Foudland near Huntly, which will be the first wind project in Aberdeenshire. The
26 MW windfarm will supply green power for 13,000 homes and will displace 60,000
tonnes of CO2 per year.
The project was granted planning permission in October 2001 and the decision by
Aberdeenshire Council was unanimous following changes to the original design
requested by the local community.
