Real estate company leads North America shopping centre industry with wind
power purchase CALGARY, June 22 /CNW/ - Ivanhoe Cambridge and ENMAX Corporation announced
today an agreement to supply green power to six of Ivanhoe Cambridge's Alberta
shopping centres and two professional offices. Under the agreement, one quarter
of the properties' electricity needs will be supplied from wind-generated
electricity. The agreement represents the largest wind power purchase in the
North American shopping centre industry. ENMAX Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of ENMAX, will provide the green
power through its Greenmax program. The green power will be supplied from wind
farms in southern Alberta including McBride Lake, Canada's largest wind farm of
which ENMAX owns 50 per cent. "We're pleased to supply these facilities with Alberta wind power,"
said Sean Durfy, president and chief operating officer of ENMAX Energy
Corporation. "This reinforces our commitment to renewable power and shows
that all types of industry are showing leadership in purchasing green
power." The five-year contract means six Ivanhoe Cambridge shopping malls and two
professional offices will purchase 25 per cent of their total electricity supply
from Greenmax. The power, amounting to 23,700 megawatt hours annually is
equivalent to reducing 23,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) emissions or not
driving a car for more than 100 million kilometres. This is the same amount of
CO(2) reduced by more than 2.5 million fully-grown trees per year. "We are extremely proud to lead our industry by purchasing 25 per cent
of our electricity needs from renewable power," said Kim McInnes, executive
vice president and chief operating officer, Ivanhoe Cambridge. "Our
decision to enter into this innovative partnership reflects both our commitment
to environmental responsibility and to the future of the communities we
serve." The participating Ivanhoe Cambridge properties are St. Albert Centre (St.
Albert), Southgate Centre and Mill Woods Town Centre (Edmonton) and Southcentre
Mall, Sunridge Mall and Deerfoot Outlet Mall (Calgary). The Southcentre
Executive Tower and Mill Woods Town Centre Professional Offices also form part
of this initiative. ENMAX Energy's Greenmax program is one of the largest green power marketing
programs in North America. ENMAX was the first Canadian utility to give
customers the option to support the development of wind-generated power in 1998.
Today, the program has more than 10,000 residential customers and about 200
commercial customers. ENMAX Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary, provides
electricity, natural gas and value-added services to about 420,000 residential,
commercial and industrial customers in Alberta through its subsidiary companies.
