Fox opens four hydroelectric power stations in northeast

MEXICO CITY, Jun 07, 2004 (El Economista/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX)

President Vicente Fox inaugurated four combined cycle power plants that were built with public and private investments of more than US$837 million. The new facilities will increase the electricity generation in the northeast by 890 megawatts.

In an intense two-day tour of Sonora, Fox assured that the public-private investment formula "does not compromise sovereignty" because it is still the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) that buys, transmits and distributes electricity to all the homes in the country. He added that his government is not seeking to privatize the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and even without an energy reform energy supply is guaranteed for the domestic production.

Fox Quesada stated that the NacoNogales power station, built and financed by Spanish firm Unión Fenosa would have a capacity of around 300 megawatts, equivalent to 24% of energy consumption in Sonora. Of that amount CFE will buy 260 MW and the remaining 40 MW will be available to be directly supplied in the region.
