House faction urges EPA to re-work mercury proposal

Washington DC (Platts)--24Jun2004

A bi-partisan group of 180 House members, led by House Democratic leader Nancy
Pelosi, sent a June 23 letter to the Environmental Protection Agency urging it
to issue a tougher version of new rules designed to cut mercury from
coal-fired power plants. That letter came in response to proposed regulations
by the EPA that would reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants by
29% by 2010, with additional reductions by 2018. The Bush Administrations
proposed rules have been met with widespread public and Congressional
criticism for failing to adequately address the risks posed by mercury
pollution, noted the House group, which includes 20 Republicans. Because of
strong opposition to the proposal, the EPA has since extended the time
available for public comment.
