RPS Becomes Official in Maryland
June 2, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] On May 26, the last day of the General Assembly session, Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich (R) signed into law the state renewable portfolio standard that passed the legislature, along with 126 other bills. The legislation passed by the Assembly requires that 7.5% of the state's electricity come from renewable sources by 2014. Mike Tidwell of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, which supported the legislation, said surrounding states are looking at the Maryland law as a model. The new law will take effect July 1. At the same time, the state Public Service Commission will work out some of the implementation details.
