Three Palo Verde nuclear units shut down Monday morning: sources

Washington (Platts)--14Jun2004

Arizona Public Service's three Palo Verde nuclear units located in
Wintersburg, Arizona, went off-line Monday morning, according to market
sources. APS was not available for comment. However, according to a recorded
message, APS said it experienced a major system disturbance Monday morning
that affected homes and businesses in a portion of the company's control area.
The cause and effects are "preliminary," APS said. Palo Verde 1 and 2 are each
1,249 MW and Palo Verde 3 is 1,247 MW. The outages, along with high
temperatures in the US Southwest, are expected to boost electricity prices at
Palo Verde and in California. APS, which operates Palo Verde on behalf of the
station's six other owners, is Arizona's largest and longest-serving electric
utility and serves about 902,000 customers in 11 of the state's 15 counties.
