US presidential hopeful supports Alaska pipeline, LNG imports

Washington (Platts)--4Jun2004

US Sen John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, said he
would support construction of a natural gas pipeline to bring gas from
Alaska's North Slope to the lower 48 states.

In an interview with the American Gas Assn's publication, American Gas,
released Friday, the presidential hopeful also said he "would support
immediate steps to increase natural gas supplies and improve natural gas
infrastructure and seek near-term commercialization of advanced clean coal and
other alternative energy sources that will relieve energy costs on American
business." While he said he would support drilling in existing natural gas and
oil basins, he said he would continue the ban on drilling offshore California
and along the Eastern Seaboard. Nor would he open up new areas off the coast
of Florida. The Massachusetts Democrat also said he supports importation of
liquefied natural gas and he wants to "work to find technology applications
that make LNG more readily available and protect surrounding communities from
unnecessary risks."
