Arizona senator calls Bush policy on carbon dioxide 'disgraceful'

Washington (Platts)--16Nov2004

US Sen John McCain (Republican-Arizona) Tuesday called the Bush
administration's policy on carbon dioxide emissions "disgraceful," and urged
the president to support his efforts to pass mandatory limits on C02
emissions. After a hearing by his Commerce, Science and Transportation
Committee, McCain said he will examine climate change initiatives offered
earlier this year by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair in preparing new legislation
designed to limit greenhouse gas emissions in the US. McCain said his bill
would cap emissions and provide a credit-trading system and would contain
"additional proposals." Blair's proposals, which include developing cleaner
energy technologies and renewable sources, "are an important framework to look
at," McCain said after the hearing. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman
Ted Stevens (Republican-Alaska) suggested at the hearing that should Congress
approve opening the Artic National Wildlife Refuge to oil exploration, money
from the project could be earmarked to help those displaced by climate change.
