Australian state Queensland funds 13-mil
liter/yr ethanol plant
Sydney (Platts)--12Nov2004
The government of Queensland has pledged a grant of A$250,000 ($190,000) to help launch an ethanol fuel industry based in the sugar growing region in the far north of the eastern Australian state. "Ethanol is the way to go," Minister for State Development and Innovation Tony McGrady said Friday. "It has the potential to provide a real future for our sugar industry and create jobs at our mills." The funding is for the establishment of an ethanol plant at the Tablelands Mill at Mareeba. Once operational the plant would have the capacity to produce 13-mil liters/year of ethanol from locally sourced sugar cane. Gasoline blended with 10% ethanol, dubbed E10, is currently being sold at 24 outlets throughout Queensland. "E10 makes great sense all around--it will provide Queenslanders with a pro-environment fuel choice and provide our sugar cane farmers and millers with a new product that will help ensure their future livelihoods," McGrady said.
