French parliament sets waste policy hearings for early 2005

The French parliament will hold hearings in early 2005 on high-level and
long-lived waste management policy. The Parliamentary Office for the
Evaluation of Science & Technology Options (Opecst) will organize three full
days of public hearings devoted to the three waste management paths outlined
in the country's 1991 law on research into management of long-term radwastes,
said Opecst Vice President Jean-Yves Le Deaut. On Jan. 20, the office will
probe partitioning and transmutation; on Jan. 27, deep geologic disposal,
"both reversible and irreversible;" and on Feb. 3, long-term interim storage.
