Iran to build first geothermal power plant

Director of geothermal projects of the Renewable Energy Organization of Iran noted that the first geothermal power plant of Iran will be built during the Fourth Economic Development Plan. Behnam Talebi added that building the plant will need cooperation from officials and allocation of suitable budget.


The official said feasibility studies have been carried out in northern parts of Iran over about 260,000 sq km based on which Sabalan; Khoi, Damavand, and Sahand regions have been selected.

Talebi stated that Sabalan project was a pilot and will pioneer similar projects in other parts of the country.
"We want to complete Meshkin Shahr’s geothermal project first, which will culminate in installing the geothermal power plant and electricity generation," he said.


Talebi noted that 50 countries took advantage of geothermal energy and the current power production capacity from geothermal power plants reached 8,000 MW in the world.
