Certainly when an operation like Gamesa chooses to locate in Pennsylvania,
there is cause to celebrate ("Spanish firm to bring wind-energy operation
in state," news article, Sept. 24). With jobs, added revenue and an
expanding wind energy market, it is a win-win situation. Perhaps the manufacturing operations can locate to replace jobs lost as the
coal industry is phased out. Presumably, these jobs are safer, cleaner,
healthier and don't add to acid mine drainage. I hope that we continue to push for energy-efficient appliances, conserve
energy when possible and make wise choices when supplying our homes with the
latest gadgetry. While wind farms have a certain majesty and are certainly nicer
neighbors than a belching coal- burning power plant, there can be too much of a
good thing. I agree with the editorial staff, good wind farm placement is
crucial. We must try to keep our appetite for energy under control. I applaud the governor's promoting of renewable energy sources. A renewable
that is also sustainable, like wind power, is worthy of support from the state.
A renewable that is not sustainable, like ethanol, is worthy of nothing. KIM
