EC wants more ambitious post-2012 Kyoto climate targets:Wallstrom
Brussels (Platts)--14Sep2004
More ambitious international climate change targets should be adopted after 2012, European Union environment commissioner Margot Wallstrom said Tuesday. "We will need to strengthen our efforts, put more ambitious targets in place and use innovative approaches to reach those targets," she said as the European Commission began a consultation on future climate change policy. The EC wants views on what the EU's climate change policy should be after the first Kyoto commitment period ends in 2012. Under Kyoto, the EU is committed to reduce its emissions by 8% compared with 1990 levels. But the EC said the world needed to cut emissions by about 30% by 2025 and 65% by 2050 compared with "business as usual" forecasts. The EC wants to keep the EU's "leadership" in global climate policy by during the upcoming debate on the post-Kyoto regime. Knowing more about what the future global action on climate change will be and the EU's contribution to it will help EU business, said the EC, by providing a stable and predictable policy environment.
