More than 1.5-mil customers still cut off in Ivan aftermath

Philadelphia (Platts)--17Sep2004

More than 1.5-mil electric customers in the US Southeast remained without
power Friday morning as the soggy remnants of Hurricane Ivan moved up the
spine of the Appalachian mountain chain. Some 710,000 Alabama Power customers
were still cut off, as were 360,000 Gulf Power customers, 210,000 Georgia
Power customers, and 24,000 Mississippi Power customers. The four utilities
are subsidiaries of Southern Power. Others reporting major outages included
Duke Power, with 93,000; Progress Energy Carolinas, with 92,000; electric
cooperatives in Georgia, with 55,000 and co-ops in North Carolina, with
29,000. Power-restoration efforts are expected to continue through the weekend
at almost all of the utilities and co-ops affected by Ivan. Work at Alabama
Power and Gulf Power will continue for another week or more--at least.
