EU ministers want many partners for nuke fusion ITER plant

Brussels (Platts)--27Sep2004

European Union ministers want to involve as many partners as possible in the
project to build a Eur10-bil ($13-bil) international thermonuclear
experimental reactor, it said late Friday.

The conclusions of the competitiveness council said there was a consensus that "international
cooperation should be on the broadest possible basis." But EU research
commissioner-designate Janez Potocnik said earlier this month that "as a last
resort" the EU would consider building ITER without all the interested
partners. The EU wants ITER, which uses fusion technology, to be built at
Caderache in France. It has the support of China and Russia, but the US and
Korea favor a rival site in Japan. The council invited the EC to set out a
clear roadmap for the final phase of the international negotiations and to
take every initiative to preserve the global character of the project.
