Expanded Energy Agency Will Promote Sustainable Projects

Sep 15 - Western Mail

A NEWLY-expanded energy agency is to be launched in Mid Wales next month to promote sustainable energy projects.

The Mid Wales Energy Agency will be launched by Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies on October 1.

The Mid Wales Energy Agency has been developed through the expansion of the existing Powys Energy Agency to work across the whole of Mid Wales.

In addition to its Newtown base the energy agency has now opened new office in Aberystwyth.

The agency has been supported by a range of public and private sector organisations including Powys County Council, the Welsh Development Agency and the Forestry Commission.

'Sustainable energy has come along way in recent years and it is now widely recognised as the future for energy production at the local and national level.

'Within the new organisation we will be taking forward a wide range of renewable and sustainable energy projects to assist communities, businesses and local authorities,' said Janet Sanders, executive director of the Mid Wales Energy Agency.

Economic Development Minister Andrew Davies said, 'Wales is the only country in Europe with a legal duty to promote sustainable development, and is already playing a major role in renewable energy generation through hydro-electricity, wind energy and photo voltaic developments.

'The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to building on this progress to ensure we provide for our future energy needs with minimal environmental impact.'

The new agency is to be launched at the Showcase Wales - Winning with Renewables conference, which is to be held at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Workshops hosted by the British Wind Energy Association, Wales Bio mass Centre and the Solar Trade Association will bring together the renewables industry at the event.

Delegates from six leading Austrian renewable companies will be hosted at the event with the aim of introducing them to Welsh companies keen to explore collaborative projects and business.
