Maryland - August 31, 2004 [SolarAccess.com] Delegates at the
Republican National Convention in New York are getting a boost of green
energy with transportation and accommodations. Constellation NewEnergy,
a competitive energy supplier, brokered a green power supply with
Sterling Planet for the Sheraton and W hotels in Manhattan, as well as
the St. Regis, all of which are owned by Starwood properties. Nine hotel
properties in all are benefiting from the green tag purchases. Energy
credits should meet Starwood's anticipated peak demand during the
convention, which is estimated to reach 10,054 MWh. "Starwood is committed to energy efficiency and proud to participate in this program with Constellation NewEnergy," said John Lembo, corporate director of energy. "We are supporters of green power and we'll be investigating more opportunities as part of our commitment to reducing negative impacts to the environment." Constellation NewEnergy is the same company that supplied renewable electricity to Boston's FleetCenter during the Democratic National Convention. General Motors (GM) is the official transportation provider for the convention, and has provided fleet of eight electric-hybrid buses, full-size hybrid pickup trucks and more than 200 cars from the company's vehicle line. "The Republican National Convention is a tremendous opportunity for GM to showcase the contributions it has made to the American economy and culture over the past 100 years, and to educate people about the groundbreaking advances in fuel economy and new technologies GM is making," said Elizabeth Lowery, GM vice president of Environment and Energy. |
