Russia
has again moved a step closer to finally ratifying the Kyoto Protocol on Climate
Change, conservation group WWF has revealed. The group has reported that
President Vladimir Putin has made a decision, ordering relevant ministers to
sign the treaty after a meeting last week. The full ratification could take
place within weeks.
The development could mark the end of the long-running question as to whether
Russia will sign up.
Russia’s involvement in the often-criticised scheme remains critical, in order
to push the number of participating nations beyond the 55% mark that guarantees
entry into law. UK PM Tony Blair pledged earlier this month to continue support
of the Protocol during next year’s G8 Presidency, particularly to the most
notable absentee – the US.
"This is a significant step towards Russian ratification of Kyoto,"
said Jennifer Morgan, Director of the WWF International Climate Change Program.
"The parliament should act quickly on ratification and President Putin
should continue to show commitment to the battle against climate change."
