Texas is top state in use of renewable energy

WASHINGTON, DC, US, 2004-09-29 (Refocus Weekly)

Texas is the top state in the U.S. for the number of companies that purchase renewable energy.

The Environmental Protection Agency says Texas has 200 Green Power Partners, which represents 40% of all partners in the national program. The 168 companies, six government agencies, four educational institutions and 18 non-governmental organizations participate in the purchase of electricity generated from wind, solar PV, geothermal, eligible biomass, eligible hydro and other renewable energy sources with low environmental impacts.

“Our Texas Partners are purchasing over 400 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, roughly equal to the power needed for 40,000 homes each year," says Richard Greene of the EPA. "In emissions reduction benefits, this is roughly equal to taking 50,000 cars off the road."

Texas is also the location of Austin Energy, which is the leading utility in the country for green pricing program in terms of annual sales. The state is second to California in capacity of wind turbines, in part because of demand created by Texas businesses purchasing green power.

The Texas Partners were honored at a ceremony to spotlight green power purchasers, which included a video salute to green power purchasers in the state.

EPA promotes renewable energy in the U.S. through its Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program in which Partners pledge to switch to green power for a designated portion of their electricity needs. In return, EPA provides technical assistance and public recognition. Nationwide, the program has 500 partners, including Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations and universities.

In Texas, the Partners include 3M, AMD, American Lung Association, Apple Computers, BP, Concordia University, Four Seasons Hotel, Hyatt Regency, IBM, Intel, NASA Johnson Space Center, National Wildlife Federation and four U.S. Air Force bases.

Consumers can obtain 97 MW of green power from Austin Energy, 1 MW from City Public Service of San Antonio, or 1.3 MW from El Paso Electric, or they can purchase from Green Mountain Energy, Reliant Energy, Strategic Energy or TXU Energy, or they can purchase Renewable Energy Certificates from 19 companies.
