Ukraine Restarts One Nuclear Reactor, Stops Two for Repairs

Kiev, 19 September: Unit No 5 at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power station has been restarted after scheduled maintenance.

Fresh nuclear fuel was loaded into the reactor during maintenance works. By early Sunday [19 September] generation at the reactor had been increased to 80 per cent of its projected capacity.

Meanwhile, unit No 3 of the same nuclear plant was disconnected from the power grid for scheduled maintenance. Maintenance works should continue until 6 November.

In accordance with an arrangement with the dispatcher service of the country's power grid, power unit No 1 at the Khmelnytskyy nuclear power station was also stopped for pre-emptive repairs of its turbogenerator. The repair works will be completed by 26 September.

As of today, 11 out of Ukraine's 14 nuclear power units are generating electricity.
