World largest solar power plant operates in Germany

BERLIN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The world's largest solar power plant went into operation Wednesday in the eastern German town of Espenhain.

The plant consists of some 33,500 photo-voltaic modules covering a huge space of 21.6 hectares. With a five-megawatt facility, it can provide enough electricity for some 1,800 households.

The 22 million-euro (26.5 million dollars) plant was a joint project of Shell Solar, GEOSOL and WestFond.

According to statistics, Germany is the leading country in Europe to harness solar energy with 500 megawatt of capacity already installed, which can provide electricity for 130,000 households.

Solar energy accounts for 0.05 percent of the total electricity generated in Germany while all renewable energy, which also includes water- and wind-power, represents 10 percent of the total.

By 2020, the German government aims to double the share of renewable energy to 20 percent of the total.
