Europe's 2004 installed wind capacity up 24% y-on-y: report
Brussels (Platts)--14Apr2004
Europe installed wind capacity was nearly 5.6GW in 2003, up almost 24% on 2002, the latest report from research agency Eurobserver shows. Europe also decommissioned 66MW, and did not match the 6GW installed in 2002, it said. The European Commission-sponsored agency found that at the start of 2004 the EU had a total installed capacity of 28.7GW--up 23%--while the rest of Europe had 391MW-- up 66%. Europe still dominates the world market, with 74% of installed capacity, but North America added 1.8GW in 2003, up 37% on 2002. Germany leads Europe with 14.6GW installed, up 22% on 2002, followed by Spain with 6.4GW, up 27%. Austria and the Czech Republic more than tripled their capacity to 415MW and 10MW respectively, while Poland and Norway more than doubled theirs to 60MW and 198MW respectively. Eurobserver estimates that the EU produced nearly 43.3TWh of wind power in 2003, up 17% on 2002. Germany and Spain produced an estimated 18.6TWh and 10.6TWh respectively, while Denmark's estimated 6TWh would equate to about 17% of its national electricity demand.
