Saskatchewan's oil and gas sector breaks drilling record

16-12-03 Saskatchewan's oil and gas sector is booming, according to the latest provincial government numbers. Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline says 2003 was a record year for oil and gas well drilling.
As of December 15, 4,075 wells had been drilled for the year in the province, surpassing the 1997 record of 3,935.

The activity marks a 19 % increase over last year, Cline said, and the government continues to look forward to steady activity in the new year. The oil and gas industry represents the largest component of Saskatchewan's economy at 8 %, employing 22,000 jobs.
The government projects revenues from the sector to be $ 892 mm for the fiscal year. Final numbers for oil and gas drilling activity for the year will be released in January.
