U.S., Russia sign fuel take-back agreement

Washington (Platts)--27May2004

An agreement on Russian take-back of fresh and spent high-enriched uranium
(HEU) research reactor fuel was signed today in Moscow by U.S. Energy
Secretary Spencer Abraham and Alexander Rumyantsev, the director of Russia's
Federal Agency for Atomic Energy. The agreement covers Soviet- or
Russian-supplied research reactors that are fueled with HEU--a group that
includes 20 reactors in 17 countries, according to a DOE press release. The
U.S., Russia, and the IAEA already have collaborated on such efforts, but the
framework agreement signed today would standardize and simplify future
operations.
