DOE asks NRC to extend license to ship uranium to Argentina
Washington (Nuclear News Flashes)--13Jan2004
DOE is asking NRC to extend an export license to ship
uranium to Argentina to support testing and demonstration of low-enriched
uranium targets for the production of molybdenum-99 in the RA3 reactor in Buenos
Aires. DOE said extension of the license to ship up to 900 grams of uranium
enriched to 19.95% U-235 is necessary because the RA3 program, supported by
DOE's Reduced Enrichment in Research & Test Reactor program, suffered a
number of schedule delays. Because DOE's Chicago Operations Office filed the
request for the extension before the license expired Dec. 31, 2003, NRC said it
will process the request as a minor amendment request.
