06-05-04 According to the chairman of the Gas Manufactures Society, Muhammad
Al-Khalifah, international gas demand grows by 2.4 % every year, expecting this
rate to be steady till 2030. Al-Khalifa also said that the major increase in demand for gas in the Gulf
area is for generating electricity and desalination, indicating that this type
of demand is rising by 14 % every year.

Al-Khalifah said that despite the decrease in demand for LNG last year, gas
remained the fastest growing sector in the energy field.
Fixed reserves of gas in the region were estimated at 29 bn cm, from which Qatar
owns 49 %, followed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The
Dolphin Line project, costing $ 10 bn, was aimed at supplying the UAE with 56.6
mm cm of Qatari gas per day.
