Green activists stage protest at Danish coal-fired Stignasverket
London (Platts)--29Mar2004
Five activists from the Danish arm of environmental organization Greenpeace
climbed the 130 meter high tower at Energi E2's coal-fired power plant
Stigsnasvarket-1 early Monday morning to protest against power and heat
production at the plant, the green group said Monday.
Stigsnasverket is located in the southwestern part of Sealand, has a capacity of 413MW, but is considered reserve capacity by the region's TSO Elkraft and has been in production less than ten hours in 2004, an Energy E2 spokeswoman said. It was not in operational mode when the protest occurred.
The activists covered the tower with a 140 sq m banner urging the company to close the plant, which began production in 1966. Greenpeace have urged the Danish government to force Energi E2 to immediately close to Stigsnas-1 and to present a plan for the decommissioning of the country's old coal-fired plants, Tarjei Haaland climate and energy spokesman for Danish Greenpeace said.
The climbers were arrested by the police after their descent, Greenpeace said.
