Overview:

Examples of biomass include saw grass, forest harvest residue, agricultural residue or stover, animal wastes and fermented sugary liquids like those pressed from corn or sugar cane. Developed biopower technologies include direct combustion, co-firing, gasification, pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion. Bio-power is becoming a cost effective supplement to fossil power generation for electricity and transportation fuels. This is opening new markets and driving development of new technology to convert biomaterial to liquid fuel or electricity. Large utilities are considering cofiring with biomass as a means to cut fuel costs and reduce certain emissions. Some small utilities are firing strictly with biomass or generating biogases from agricultural waste to power boilers. Liquid fuels are being used to power utility fleets, industrial processes and private automobiles. Speakers at Bioenergy in Competitive Power Markets will address issues relating to biopower, development of bioenergy for transportation and cogeneration for manufacturing. At this stage of energy research and development these are interdependent issues. Bioenergy in Competitive Power Markets will discuss research and development, feedstock availability, equipment efficiency, maintenance costs and facility availability. Hear the experts give a succinct overview of biopower development including technology issues, regulatory challenges, opportunities, economic and market variables.
