Abbott Labs to pay $475,000 to resolve air violations at Illinois plant

April 5 -- Abbott Laboratories will pay $475,672 to settle alleged clean air violations at its North Chicago, Ill., health care product manufacturing plant.

The U.S. Environmental Protection agency said the company failed to comply with leak detection and repair requirements for hazardous air pollutants. Inspectors found the alleged violations during a June 2004 inspection and from a July 2004 information request.

Abbott, based in Abbott Park, Ill., will spend $418,300 on two environmental projects, which includes replacing 27 of its sales vehicles with hybrids. The company also will pay a $57,372 fine.
