California air board targets transportation pollution

April 21 --

California plans to cut emissions associated with the movement of goods in the state by 20 percent to 40 percent by 2010 compared to 2001 levels.

The California Air Resources Board adopted a plan that’s expected to cost $6 billion to $10 billion to implement and have $34 billion to $47 billion in health benefits over the next 15 years.

The plan, covering ports, diesel-powered ships, locomotives, trucks, harbor craft and cargo handling equipment, also will cut diesel particulate matter associated with the movement of goods by 85 percent.
