Dell outlines new computer recycling plans

April 6 -- Dell Inc. plans to triple the amount of computers it recovers and recycles by the end of 2009.

In fiscal year 2006, which ended Feb. 3, the computer firm reused and recycled nearly 40,000 tons of electronics from its customers and company operations, according to its annual sustainability report released April 5. More than half of the recovered products came from customers, a 72 percent increase from fiscal year 2005.

The company, based in Round Rock, Texas, also has been successful in meeting the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances directive, exceeding it goal of shipping 3 million RoHS-compliant motherboards per quarter by the fourth quarter of 2005.
