Iron-steel industry cut carbon emissions 38% from ´90 to ´03, report
says
April 25 --
The iron and steel industry reduced carbon
emissions by 37.7 percent between 1990 and 2003, and recycled material
now accounts for 95 percent of the structural steel produced in the
United States, according to the American Institute of Steel Construction
Inc.
The structural steel trade association said its members have recycled
about 25 million tons of steel during the past five years.
"The industry has long maintained a focus on finding better ways to
produce, fabricate and erect steel," said Roger Ferch, president of the
association. "An important part of this is making sure that structural
steel is not only an ideal solution for building purposes, but an
environmentally responsible solution as well."
