BP unit adds Greenlight Energy for $98 million

Aug. 15 --

BP Alternative Energy is buying a U.S.-based wind power company for $98 million, the company said.

The unit of energy giant BP is acquiring Greenlight Energy Inc. as part of a plan to accelerate plans to develop a wind power business in North America, BP said.

Greenlight Energy, of Charlottesville, Va., has 39 wind power projects either operating or under development across the country.

"This purchase gives BP Alternative Energy immediate access to a large number of high quality wind development projects across the country, including a number of projects we expect to be able to develop over the next few years," said Steve Westwell, chief executive of BP Alternative Energy.
