biomass include saw grass, forest harvest residue, agricultural residue or
stover, animal wastes and fermented sugary liquids like those pressed from
corn or sugar cane. Developed biopower technologies include direct
combustion, co-firing, gasification, pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion.
Bio-power is becoming a cost effective supplement to fossil power
generation for electricity and transportation fuels. This is opening new
markets and driving development of new technology to convert biomaterial
to liquid fuel or electricity. Large utilities are considering cofiring
with biomass as a means to cut fuel costs and reduce certain emissions.
Some small utilities are firing strictly with biomass or generating
