Australia's multi-million-dollar energy research agreement with the United States is paving the way for cheaper, more effective solar power.

Minister for the Environment Ian Campbell told Parliament that the Australian firm Solar Systems has been working with the U.S. company Boeing to develop solar cells three times more efficient than those currently in use. The solar cells originally were designed for powering satellites, as part of the U.S. space program, but have been modified for use on land.

Campbell said the agreement highlights the importance of Australia's involvement in the Asia-Pacific partnership on clean development and climate.
