DuPont to recycle sulfuric acid, sulfur gases at Texas refinery

Aug. 24 --

DuPont said it expects to cut emissions at its refinery in El Paso, Texas, by the equivalent of emissions from 50,000 cars.

The company is working with Western Refining to recycle spent sulfuric acid and sulfur gases at the refinery, a move that cuts sulfur dioxide emissions by 74 percent from the site, DuPont said.

Sulfuric acid is used as a catalyst in alkylation at the refinery. DuPontīs sulfuric acid regeneration service recycles spent acid as well as sulfur gases and returns fresh sulfuric acid for reuse.

DuPontīs first sulfuric acid regeneration unit started at the Valero Refinery in Delaware City, Del., in September. Another project recently broke ground at a ConocoPhillips refinery in Linden, N.J.
