Home Remedies for a
Feverish Earth
June 22, 2006 — By ENN
Many knew it, some just didn't want to
believe it, and others flatly denied it, but it appears that the verdict
is in, and the evidence is hard to refute: The Earth is warming up.
On Thursday, the National Academy of Sciences revealed the conclusions
drawn from its extensive research into global temperatures over the past
2,000 years. The bottom-line news is that the planet is hotter now than at
any other point during that span of time. (Related story: "Earth
Hottest It's Been in 2,000 Years")
We read this week that the reality of global warming appears to be seeping
into the public consciousness, as evidenced by Al Gore's movie, "An
Inconvenient Truth," the carbon dioxide offset plans made by World Cup
soccer tournament organizers, and the promise of carbon neutrality made by
the World Bank this month. (See the whole story: "From
World Cup to World Bank, Climate Actions Rise.")
For the average concerned person, though, the implications of a warmer
world can seem more than a tad unsettling. After all, what can one person
do to help turn the tide?
As we've reported before on ENN, on a individual basis, it really is the
little things that can add up to a big difference.
This week on Earth News Radio, ENN's Jerry Kay caught up with Andrés
Edwards, author of The Sustainability Revolution: Portrait of a
Paradigm Shift. For those of us who want to do something to move
toward sustainability, but feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the
problem, Edwards has some sound, practical advice.

Jerry also spoke with David Helvarg, founder of the Blue Frontier
Campaign, which is dedicated to ocean and coastal conservation. Like
Edwards, Helvarg believes in the power of the individual to make a
difference through day-to-day actions. One particularly appealing piece of
advice: Go to the beach! Helvarg says that if you take a litter bag, keep
your pets under control, and refrain from feeding wildlife, enjoying and
gaining inspiration from the beach can be a step in the right direction.
